(4 days/3 nights, loop trip in 20 Lakes Basin beginning and ending at Saddlebag Lake). Ferry across Saddlebag Lake and then north to Greenstone, Wasco, and Steelhead Lakes, camping off trail above Steelhead Lake with a view of Mill Lake); cross-country day hike to lakes east of Steelhead and return to camp for 2nd night; full packs to Shamrock Lake, Helen Lake, and camping at Hummingbird Lake (3rd night); south back to Saddleback Lake and ferry back across to car park.

Meadows). South along Lyell Canyon to the junction with Ireland Creek

camp 200+ feet east of the Creek); return.

days/3 nights, from Mosquito Flat trailhead to the lakes in Little
Lakes Valley). Mosquito Flat trailhead to camp in the northeast corner
of Chickenfoot Lake; cross-country day hike south of Long Lake, up a
rock fall to Treasure Lakes, and down steep wall west of Gem Lakes;
cross-country day hike down the canyon north of Chickenfoot Lake to
Hidden Lakes and then back via Box Lake and the trail to camp;
return to Mosquito Flat trailhead.

days/6 nights, from Onion Valley Trailhead to Shepherd Pass
Trailhead). Onion Valley Trailhead to above Bullfrog Lake;
down Bubbs Creek and cross to East Lake Creek, camping at
East Lake; to the tarn on the south side, above Lake Reflection,
partly cross-country; cross-country up a chute to Little Joe Pass and down
to the first lake after the pass; cross-country to lake west
of Pacific Crest Trail, near junction to Shepherd Pass Trail;
up and over Shepherd Pass to Anvil Camp; down Shepherd Creek and
then Symmes Creek to Shepherd Pass Trailhead.

Trailhead at Silver Lake (June Lake Loop, CA), Agnew Lake, Gem Lake;

cross country to Davis Lakes; over Island Pass, 1000 Island Lakes, and
to Clark Lakes; return on opposite side of Agnew Lake.

- May 2006
(with Susanne Riehemann),
(7 day loop in the Grand Canyon). Day 1: 6 am bus to Hermit's
Rest, and then 7.8 miles down to Hermit Creek camp. Day 2: Day hike
down Hermit Creek canyon to the Colorado. Day 3: morning hike with
full packs to Monument Creek, and set up camp. Afternoon day hike
down Monument Creek canyon to the Colorado. Day 4: Morning hike
with full packs to Salt Creek. Afternoon spent reading in the
shade. Day 5: Hike 7 miles to Indian Gardens and set up camp.
Evening walk to Plateau Point, for the view and to hang with the
California condors. Day 6: Day hike down the Bright Angel trail to the
Colorado. Day 7: Hike 4.5 miles but up over 3000 feet to reach the
rim and conclude the trip.

- September 2005
(with Susanne Riehemann
and Alyson Zalta),
(7 day loop in the California Sierras). Day 1: 2:30pm ferry across
Lake Florence, and walked a couple of miles to Alder Creek. Day 2:
Alder Creek to Sally Keyes Lakes. Day 3: Sally Keyes Lakes to East
Fork Upper Bear Creek, a couple of hundred feet above the junction
with the Pacific Crest Trail. Day 4: Cross-country, continuing up the
East Fork of Upper Bear Creek to Seven Gables Lakes, stopping to do a
day hike up to Vee Lake. Day 5: Cross-country, over Ruskie Pass and
dropping down to Merriam Lake. Day 6: Cross-country to the basin
below Merriam Lake, where we picked up the southeast trail down to
French Canyon, turning southwest at Hutchinson Meadow, and through
Paiute Canyon to the NW corner of Kings Canyon National Park. We
turned west and headed back towards Florence Lake, camped about
a mile west of the national park, off the South Fork of the San Joaquin.
Day 7: Return to Florence Lake.

- September 2004
(with Susanne Riehemann),
(6 day traverse from east to west of the California Sierras). In
this trip, our hiking buddies, Paul Bleakney and Mark Aronszajn, both
of Seattle, traversed the Sierras from west to east. We met in the
middle (at Lake Italy, 11,200), had a layover day/day hike, exchanged
car keys, and then completed the traverse. The east-west route was:
Pine Creek trailhead, camp above Lower Pine Lake, camp in lower
Granite Park, over Italy Pass and camp at Lake Italy. Day hike
to pass between Jumble Lake and White Bear Lake. From Lake Italy,
down to Pacific Crest Trail, and to junction with Upper Bear Creek
trail (camp). Final day: Upper Bear Creek down to trail head, and then
walked out the jeep road to Kaiser Pass Road, where Mark and Paul had
parked a car.

California Eastern Sierras): Big Pine Lakes trailhead, camp between First
and Second Lakes, camp above Fourth Lake, day hike to Palisade
Glacier, day hike to Summit Lake, Sixth Lake, Seventh Lake with
cross-country return, and return via Black Lake on final day.
